With the assistance of a Knysna eye specialist, a local aid organization has been able to provide a young Knysna girl with valuable corrective eye surgery.

From Us With Love (FUWL) first met three year-old Chantel Stroebel at Magadelene’s Creche in Concordia last year, and noticed her sever squint.

FUWL approached the school and girl’s foster mother for consent to have Chantel’s eye problem rectified, and were referred by KNysna optometrist Dr. Peter Haurper.

Chantel was placed on a waiting list for her operation, and it was performed last week at the Plettenberg Bay Clinic by Dr. Haurper at no cost.

Her surgery was successful and she is recovering well.

In the past Chantel was unable to see the books at story-time, and had to be placed near the front of the classroom. Teasing and ridicule started even at her young age.

“It takes the compassion and care from people like the doctors and others in the community to make a big difference like this,” said a FUWL spokesperson following the operation, adding that “FUWL would like to thank everyone involved in making this happen”.
